FRONT RANGE FREEDOM TOUR ’14 just got a bit more real!
It’s one thing to build web pages, design jerseys, and recruit riders. That stuff’s all fun, part of the dream, but it’s all virtual. When there’s snow on the ground and I’ve been cranking my bike in the garage for three months, it seems a little distant. It’s hard to hard to imagine actual sweat and flat tires and hills at the end of all this dreaming.
One of our issues for year two of this tour is finding better routes for a couple of the days. I’ve been digging through Google Maps and emailing with several folks, and finally arrived at what I hoped would be a safe choice for our Monday ride from Fort Collins to Boulder. So Becky, Monte, and I decided to check it out (in the car) last week.
Like everything else, things look different in reality than they do on a computer screen. Road conditions weren’t always exactly as advertised, and we found a few surprises. But overall, the new route will work much better than last year’s version.
Mostly, though, it felt good to just get a feel for where we’ll be in a few weeks. Picking possible rest stops and lunch spots, fine-tuning directions, imagining which hills will cause struggles–it all brought a sense of—well—reality to the whole thing.
I guess that’s why I share this glimpse with you. I want you to have that sense as well. I hope you’re considering how you can be part of the team and contribute to this big dream.
