“What’s the central goal of one who follows Jesus?”
Our Bible study asks trick questions. Seems like we ought to know the answer to this one, right? We go to church, read the Bible, listen to the sermons, pray occasionally—we should at least know the main target, shouldn’t we?
So before you read any more, do you have an answer? What’s the mission, the main goal, the central purpose of all this stuff? At its very core, what’s it all about?
Our study pointed us to this passage:
But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ. (Philippians 3:7-8)
Sharing the gospel, making disciples, fighting for justice, feeding the poor, building communities—all of these are critical kingdom activities. But none of them are the main point.
The central goal is to know Jesus. If whatever you’re doing helps you know Him better, it’s on track. If not, it really doesn’t matter what else gets accomplished.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? So simple that some of the greatest people in history have devoted themselves to this goal and scarcely scratched the surface. He’s infinite. There’s always more to discover.
Everything is loss compared to knowing Jesus. Everything.
