If I’d known how hard it would be, I probably wouldn’t have done it.
I’ll bet you’ve said—or thought—that. The marriage, raising kids, that career change, starting the new business—I’ll bet there’s something you did simply because you really didn’t know what you were getting into.
I knew the pass I climbed yesterday would be difficult. I’m glad I didn’t know HOW difficult it would be before I started.
It’s good life works that way. A lot of interesting, amazing stuff might never happen if we knew how hard it might be.
I can tell you one thing. I’ve seen the view from a lot of mountain passes, many of them higher than the one I crawled up yesterday. But that air was crisper, the trees greener, the vista more spectacular than any I’ve seen before. I think there’s something about the satisfaction of earning the view that makes it sweeter.
There are plenty of easier ways to reach the top. Our culture’s all about encouraging the easy way, the shortcut. But I think it’s a principle: for the stuff that matters, there’s no “easy button.”
You can buy the t-shirt. The full heart only comes from following the dream.

The schedule craziness has begun. Today we record a 30-minute TV show and do a radio talk show with the mayor of Santa Fe. So, not sure how much riding will happen.
Tomorrow morning we drive to Albuquerque to speak to some guys in an addiction recovery program at Joy Junction. Again, riding takes a back seat to more important commitments.
All of this was last-minute. As word spreads, hopefully more interruptions will occur. Because RICH’S RIDE isn’t about a ride.
