HAPPY MONDAY!
Too much water brings us today’s word-of-the-week…
COMPARE
Colorado just experienced what some scientists call a 500-year flood.
In a semi-arid climate, some areas received more than a normal year’s worth of rain in twenty-four hours. However you categorize it, things are a mess.
People died. Entire towns are literally unreachable. Hundreds of homes are totally destroyed. Stranded folks had to be rescued by helicopter and airlifted to shelters.
We had 4″ of water in our basement.
We didn’t have to evacuate. No major damage. Compared to the devastation around us, it’s a minor inconvenience.
But what’s the point of comparing?
We still had a mess to clean up. Wet stuff had to be carried, sorted, and hauled away. Mold needed to be mitigated. It’s not as bad as other situations, but that’s not the point.
We minimize pain and struggle when we compare it. There’s always someone in worse circumstances, and there’s always someone who’s in a better place. So what?
If you’re sick, who cares if someone else is sicker? If you’re in pain, you’re in pain–period.
If you’re happy, is your joy diminished because someone else might be happier?
One of my friends has a saying: “Everyone’s worst is their worst.” I think we’d be wise to think more in those terms.
Let’s be thankful in all circumstances. Let’s also be honest about the highs and lows, the pains and joys. They’re real.
Don’t compare.
Have a great week!
