What Do You Know About School?

wilberforceI taught kids for thirty-five years. I thought I knew something about schools and children.

Today I learned about a private academy in New Delhi, India. Twenty-two of this academy’s students are children of women enslaved in the sex trade. They live in rented houses with missionaries who work to rescue them, and their mothers, from the horrors of the life in which they’re trapped. For most of these children, these homes and education are the only barrier between them and being sold into sexual slavery.

The missionaries, the Donaldsons, depend on donations to support their work. It costs about $25 for tuition and books to send one child to Life Center Academy. $120 pays one child’s yearly expenses for rent and food.

The Donaldsons also operate an outreach center out of an apartment in the heart of the red light district. From that center they reach out to the prostituted women and children that live and work in absolutely deplorable circumstances.

Turns out I didn’t know as much as I thought about schools and children.

Now I know. So do you.

We’re riding bikes next month to support U COUNT campaign and their partners. Our efforts will help a few of these kids.
