Can You Get Riders Block?

We had a great event Thursday morning with kids at Morningside Christian Academy in Port St Lucie. These are our new friends Jason and Laura Dugmore, who arranged the event. Jason’s a fellow handcyclist. We “met” a couple of years ago through my blog–it was great to finally meet face-to-face.

I think I got a case of “riders block” today.

You’ve heard about writers block. A writer is all ready to write, wants to write, has all the necessary tools to write—but the words won’t come. There’s just no inspiration.

Most professional writers will tell you there’s no such thing. “Writers block” is mostly an excuse for procrastination, lack of discipline, or laziness.

Anyway, today I felt like I had riders block. I wanted to ride. I felt good, weather was great, had the route figured out. But every time I passed a roadside stand selling cold drinks I just wanted to stop. If I could have gotten off my bike, Becky might have had to come back and drag me away.

No inspiration.

Ever been there? A task you love and really want to do—just not today, not right now?

As I cranked along I wondered if something was wrong. Had I lost my dream? Was this some kind of message from God?

Imagine calling a plumber and hearing, “Sorry, I’m just not feeling it today. I’ll fix that leak when I sense more inspiration.”

Plumbers block? Don’t think so.

Somewhere south of Port St Lucie I realized inspiration is a luxury. It’s great when it happens, but we can’t rely on it to get the work done.

God inspired this dream.

But if I choose to follow, I gotta ignore those roadside stands.

After Thursday’s ride we’re 361 miles down the road. Despite two late-start days this week, we’re staying right on pace.

Friday we’re doing an early-morning TV interrview followed by a speaking event with a group of Christian homeschool kids and their parents. Then–a rest day. No riding. Gotta let old muscles recuperate a bit.
