Babies And Books

I’ve never given birth to a baby.

As a writer, producing a book is about as close as I’ll get to that feeling. That’s a good thing from just about every perspective I can imagine.

This week is all about anticipation as we await delivery (birth reference) of the first copies of the new book. We’ve seen pictures and digital proofs (kind of like a sonogram), but there’s nothing quite like cracking open that first case and holding the final product in my hands. I guess that’s sort of like a birth, though most moms might object to the “cracking open the case” and “final product” metaphors.

The book, when it finally arrives, will be the culmination of a great deal of hard work by a lot of dedicated, talented people—which ideally makes it a bit different from the giving birth thing. It’ll bring back memories of late nights, rough drafts, discarded ideas, and hopefully a final story worth telling—also slightly divergent from my picturesque notion of the birth experience.

I wanted to use the analogy of a baby’s birth to convey my excitement, but obviously it’s not working out. Writing books and bring babies into the world don’t have as much in common as I thought.

Nevertheless, we’re really looking forward to the weekend launch and the chance to share this story. If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, you can still get a few copies delivered just in time for Christmas.
