Happy Monday!

Only one choice for today’s word-of-the-week…

FREE

On Saturday our IJM Freedom Tour team toured the National Underground Railway Freedom Center.

Frankly, it’s a difficult experience to describe. Exhibits trace the history of slavery and link to the modern-day issues we’re riding to end. We learned a lot we didn’t know about America’s slavery issues and saw difficult reminders of current conditions in which an estimated 27 million people are not free.

I still cannot get my mind around that fact. 27 million humans, more than half of them children, labor in bondage. Today. Right now.

Here’s a paraphrased quote from one of the exhibits:

In the past, an underground railway of individuals risked their lives to traffic slaves to freedom. Today a vast criminal enterprise reverses the process and works to traffic and enslave millions.

Somehow, some way, this has to stop. It’ll stop only when enough people are so aware of this atrocity that they refuse to allow its continued existence.

That’s why we’re riding bikes today, cranking over the Appalachian Mountains on day 1 of our journey to DC. People need to know.

Slavery has to stop. As long as we allow it to exist, none of us is truly free.
