Ecclesia

Traveling on Rich’s Ride brings wonderful side benefits. One of those is attending a variety of churches.

Becky and I love the people at our home church, Timberline Church in Fort Collins. We couldn’t have done this project without their love and support, and we’re excited to be there in a few weeks.

But it’s great to hear other voices, see what’s happening at other churches, and be reminded that we all worship the same Lord.

Last Sunday we heard about ecclesia, the word from which we get the word “church.”

Ecclesia literally means “called out,” and I was reminded how important it is for the church to avoid a bunker mentality.

We’re not called to a building, to hide with like-minded folks behind fortified walls.

This trip reminds me that we need to step out into an often-hostile world. The church is a home base, a place of equipping and support. But that’s not where the work occurs.

I love the safety we feel at Timberline. We’ll return with gratitude for rest and encouragement.

But I also love that Timberline sent us out, as they’ve sent countless others out, into the community and the world. I love that “doing church” isn’t the point.

We follow Jesus—leaving safety and comfort to reach out to a world that needs His message.
