Choice

Happy Monday!

My week (and I’m guessing yours) will be consumed by the word-of-the-week…

Choice

Most of our lives are determined by the choices we make. I don’t know about you, but a lot of those choices just don’t seem all that clear.

Sometimes it feels like we’re literally frozen by the inability to make a choice. Can’t get a clear sense of direction, don’t want to make a mistake, can’t move forward until we decide.

I’m facing such a spot right now. I’m going to share it and ask for some help from some really smart people—that would be you. Maybe we’ll all learn something about how we resolve this kind of dilemma.

The setup

You know I’m planning this bike ride project. We’re working on branding, which is really just a fancy way of telling the story. We have to be able to capture the story in a 2-3 minute video.

If you’ve been following along, you know my idea all along has been to benefit two very worthy causes. For a lot of reasons, I selected Wounded Warrior Project and Blood: Water Mission.

My idea was to give people a choice. Sounded like a great idea, but it turns out that having two causes makes telling the story much harder. The message gets cloudy and confusing, and it’s just a fact that people don’t identify as much when you try to tell two different stories.

The decision

I’ve thought about it, asked others for advice and guidance, and prayed about it. And every time I think I have an answer, it’s different.

Should I go with my original notion of two organizations and risk losing clarity in the eyes of my audience? Or should I choose a single cause and make the story more clean and crisp?

And if I decide to choose a single cause, which should I choose?

You should care because…

…well, I could use some help. You guys are a pretty insightful group, and I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Beyond that, though, maybe we can all learn something about how we make real-life choices. Ever notice how often you have to decide without enough information?

That’s how most of life’s choices work. It’s not like math class—the problems aren’t usually clearly defined, and often there’s not a right answer.

What are your thoughts? You can leave a comment here.

Have a great week!
