As we prepared to climb Raton Pass on the first Freedom Tour in 2013 our friend Kristen pulled out her phone.
“You guys have to listen to this song.”
So we crowded around and listened as she played SNOWIN ON RATON by Townes van Zandt. We’ve repeated this little ceremony each year.
Funny how an obscure country song with no spiritual meaning and no lyrical connection to the ride–aside from the title–assumes a sort of emotional connection in this kind of context.
Climbing Raton Pass was difficult, but it was also a lot of fun and the view from the top was really satisfying. Along the way we repeated some other ceremonies that link us to past tours.
