Busybody

Happy New Year. Over the weekend I encountered (in Scripture) today’s word-of-the-week… BUSYBODY It’s a word I’ve never noticed in the Bible, but there it is: We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 2 Thessalonians 3:11 According to one dictionary, a busybody is “a person […]

Reflect

Happy Monday! I hope you enjoyed a peaceful Christmas weekend. Today we begin a week traditionally dedicated to  our word-of-the-week… REFLECT During Rich’s Ride I used this photo in a post titled The Right Rear View. The gist was that the rear view mirror should be small. Most of what’s important is ahead. You shouldn’t stare at […]

Cost

Happy Monday. During church yesterday I encountered today’s word-of-the-week… COST We talk about the price Jesus paid at the cross. As I listened to beautiful Christmas music I wondered about the incredible cost of Christmas. I thought about infinite God choosing to confine Himself in a human body. He volunteered for nine months in a […]

Spirit

Happy Monday. Christmas arrives in two weeks, and I’m having trouble finding today’s word-of-the-week… SPIRIT You know, that wonderful glowing Christmas Spirit—lights and shopping and chestnuts roasting on an open fire. This year for some reason it’s just not happening. I thought about it a bit over the weekend and wondered if perhaps it’s not […]

Who Gets On The Platform?

One of the inspiring people we met was a pastor in a wheelchair. He fell from a ladder while painting a house. His injury left him totally paralyzed below his neck with absolutely no use of arms or hands. But his physical limitations didn’t paralyze his heart or his spirit, and he’s served as senior pastor of his church for several years.

Anniversary

Happy Monday! Today’s a special day for me, a day worthy of a special word-of-the-week… ANNIVERSARY Twenty-four years ago today, December 5, 1987, I got out of bed and walked downstairs. That night I slept fitfully in a special ICU bed, my neck immobilized to prevent further spinal cord damage from three shattered vertebrae. Today’s the anniversary of […]

Routine

Happy Monday! Returning to “real life” after Rich’s Ride offers another perspective on today’s word-of-the-week… ROUTINE I’d guess that for most of us, “routine” has a somewhat negative connotation. Routine  often means boring, repetitive, same-old-same-old. Most folks don’t dream of accomplishing something routine. However … Sixty-four nights of hotel rooms, restaurants, new places and people […]

Perceive

Happy Monday. I’ve been thinking a lot about today’s word-of-the-week… PERCEIVE I’m still trying to process the experience of Rich’s Ride. Folks keep asking me what I learned, what my big “take-aways” are. I’m seeking the theme, the pattern, the big picture created by all of the individual snapshots. It’s like stepping back from a […]

Determined

Happy Monday. It’s a great day for this word-of-the-week… DETERMINED I missed you. The rest, the ride home, the time to process all that happened over the past two months—it was all good. I appreciated the break. But I missed you. I missed writing, reading your comments, figuring out where I missed the mark. I’m […]

Rest

Happy Monday. It’s the first week following the conclusion of Rich’s Ride, so I’ve selected an obvious word-of-the-week… REST I’ve published this blog for more than three years without a break. I love writing. I love hearing from you. But this week, I need to rest. We’re traveling home, meeting with folks from Convoy Of […]

Complete

Happy Monday. It’s the final week of Rich’s Ride, the perfect time for this word-of-the-week… Complete Complete—the verb. This week is about completing what we’ve started. To me, completing involves more than just getting done. Completing means ending well, making the final days the best. It’s about using everything we’ve learned to take full advantage […]

Duck

Happy Monday. We begin week #7 of Rich’s Ride with a silly word-of-the-week… DUCK! It’s not what you think. We spent the weekend at the historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis, thanks to the generosity of our new friends Dudley and Michelle Boyd. Among many other wonderful amenities, The Peabody is known for The Peabody Ducks. Who knew […]
