In the “old days” yards were planted with seed.
Scatter the seed, water it, wait a while, and grass grows. But we, of course, are impatient. So we use sod.
Instant yards. Dirt in the morning, grass by nightfall.
It’s a pretty good metaphor for the way we deal with a lot of processes.
Jesus told lots of planting stories. Perhaps we might learn something from that.
I believe Jesus is always at work in every circumstance, scattering seeds that will grow at just the right pace and be ready at just the right time. I believe that, but I don’t like it.
I don’t like it because I want instant results. I want sod, not seed.
I want answers, and I want them now. And when I don’t get the answers I want in my time frame, I’m pretty sure He’s not listening. Or He just doesn’t care. Or He’s busy with something more important.
All of that is silly of course. But when I’m stressed and hurting, or when someone I love is sick, I tend to forget.
Faith in Jesus is mostly about watering seeds, not laying sod.
