Who You Are, What You Do

 garageYou do what you are.

That’s sort of backwards from the usual message, but I think I like it.

My friend Jon Swanson writes a great blog called 300 Words A Day. I encourage you to add it to your reading list.

Jon has this great way of using everyday stuff to talk about following Jesus. He recently started running and observed that it doesn’t matter what the weather’s like, he has to get out there and run. Why?

Because runners run. It’s what they do. They don’t talk about running or read about running or wish they could run.

Runners run.

Of course, Jon wasn’t really talking about running. He said the same thing applies to folks who pray. They don’t talk about praying or read about praying or wish they could pray.

Pray-ers pray. It’s what they do.

I’m cranking my bike on a stationary trainer in the garage these days because I’m a cyclist and, well, cyclists cycle. But this isn’t about cycling.

It’s an interesting way to think about who we are and what we do, mostly because we can easily confuse thinking or talking about an activity with the activity itself.

You do what you are.

Servants serve.

Hopers hope.

Seekers of justice–seek justice.

Followers of Jesus–follow Jesus.

What are you? Do you do what you are?

    Rich,

I still read your blog most everyday.

“Who are you? What do you do?” provokes a thought process that is constructive and humbling. I wonder if I can “do” more than “talk” or “think”?

Thanks for your blog and for prompting me to do” more things.

    Your friend in Christ.
