In my experience, following Jesus is never boring.
I never envisioned myself writing books or speaking to groups or riding a handcycle thousands of miles per year, so I suppose I ought to be past the notion of being surprised when a new opportunity drops at my door. But I never would have imagined myself in this particular role.
Two dear friends asked me to do their wedding.
Yeah, you read that right. They want me to be the guy that says, “I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
I didn’t even know I could legally do such a thing, but this is Colorado. Turns out I just need a little paperwork and I can officially marry people. Crazy, huh?
I know I’m kidding around, but this is actually a huge responsibility. I thought and prayed awhile before I said Yes.
Obvious question…why not ask a real pastor? Well, it’s complicated, but the short answer is there’s no pastor with whom both bride and groom have a close connection. So they either have to pick someone for the sake of convention or step way outside the box and choose a close friend. And since we all care more about honoring God and relationships than following rules, we decided this was a good choice.
This decision will impact our relationships. If I’m going to do this, we’ll need to discuss some sensitive topics. From my perspective, part of honoring God is being as honest as possible about the issues involved in creating a healthy, biblical marriage. The hard part, of course, is that I know a lot more about the questions than the answers.
I guess this is the sort of crazy thing that happens when you follow Jesus. You think you know where you’re headed, but you’d better be prepared.
He’s most likely got something unexpected in mind.
