Happy Monday!

Including others in the latest tour prompts today’s word-of-the-week…

OPEN

MondayI know I diminish my relationships when I cling to material possessions. It’s all a gift from God to be held with open hands. Doesn’t mean I always live out that principle, but it’s clearly my goal.

But what about less tangible items like ideas or, in my case, books and projects? I’ve discovered a disturbing tendency to cling a bit too tightly to this silly enterprise we’ve called “RICH’S RIDE.”

Even the name implies possession. It’s my ride. It belongs to me, right?

Of course that’s not the truth, but it’s a big temptation, especially when I’m engaged in expanding the circle of people surrounding the project. You put your name out there enough times, see it plastered on trailers and book covers and web sites, and the enemy whispers in your ear that perhaps it really is all about you.

Then a group of people shows up and says, “This isn’t our ride. You’re the leader. It’s your thing.”

They’re right, and they’re completely wrong.

I found myself asking a perplexing question. “How to I assume responsibility without being the owner?”

I just re-read The Parable Of The Bags Of Gold (Matthew 25:14-30). One moment the correct path seems absolutely clear. Then I move a few feet and I feel confused again.

I don’t know about you, but for me the notion of serious, responsible stewardship is tough to internalize. It’s one of those ideas that’s a lot easier to talk about than to implement.

I want to hold RICH’S RIDE in open hands, to make sure it’s not about Rich. I also want the story to touch lives and inspire others. People keep saying, “Just make sure it’s always about God.”

Sounds so easy, until I actually try to do it.

Have a great week.
