…have long-term consequences
This week I’m thinking about what I’d tell graduates at commencement. Previous thoughts:
- You’ll never love too much.
- When you’re not sure what to do, help someone.
- Be known by what you’re for (not by what you’re against).

Our actions are a lot like this cymbal. There’s the event, the sound, that captures everyone’s attention. The drumstick hits the cymbal, and everyone immediately notices the CRASH.
But the cymbal continues to vibrate long after it’s struck. The musician moves on, but the effects of his action continue to impact the world.
This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain … Mark 4:26-28
We frequently don’t see the lingering effects of our actions. We observe the immediate result and move on. Perhaps we believe we failed, that whatever we did made no difference. Maybe we think there’s no point to our effort or struggle.
But God’s about the long term. He causes everything to work together for good—in His timing. Nothing’s pointless, nothing’s wasted. Our actions reverberate, even when we can’t see their effects.
What you see, what happens right now, isn’t all that is.
Your actions have long-term consequences.
