Service

Happy Monday!

I’ve been thinking for a few days about today’s word-of-the-week…

Service

Last week I attended a dinner at which our church sent five families into full-time ministry. These were young families with small children. A couple of parents held babies as they spoke.

They’re going to places like Guatemala, Mozambique, and Pakistan. Those are risky spots for anyone. For Americans who plan to intentionally talk about Jesus they’re dangerous places.

The thing that struck me was their smiles. It would’ve been easy to assume they were oblivious to the danger, but each family told stories of a long preparation process. They knew exactly what they were getting into.

They aren’t going because they’re irresponsible parents intentionally placing their kids in harm’s way for a cheap thrill. They aren’t reluctantly responding to an obligation.

They’re going with eyes open, with joy and love. They simply want to serve.

I’m still trying to understand that level of commitment. Thinking about it is a good way to begin the week.

Have a great week.
