Yesterday I was privileged to speak to about 800 students at North Central University in Minneapolis. It was an awesome experience with a wonderful group of young people.
As I prepared for my talk I got a new perspective on a familiar Scripture story. You can read the entire passage (The Sheep And The Goats), but here’s the portion that struck me:
‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Honestly, this story has always seemed designed to induce guilt. Because He goes on to speak about those who ignored Him.
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
Oops—that’s me. Guilty as charged.
But today I had a different thought.
I know Jesus isn’t about guilt. So what if He wasn’t trying to make me feel guilty?
What if He was reminding me that we’re all doing life together? What if He was telling us to take care of each other because every single person matters to Him?
I think maybe Jesus was saying that you and I are Together—On A Journey Of Hope.
