HAPPY MONDAY!
This past Saturday we witnessed a completely spontaneous demonstration of today’s word-of-the-week…
PREACHING
Becky and I got up early Saturday. Some guys volunteered to come by and help her with a few small projects in the garage—nothing major, the sort of things a guy in a wheelchair can’t do. It’s stuff that accumulates and gets frustrating for both of us.
So we got up early to get ready, moved everything into the driveway, and made sure it would be as easy as possible for them. About the time we were all set, they called and canceled.
Stuff happens. It’s a beautiful Saturday, wives had other ideas, kids wanted attention, whatever. When you depend on volunteers, it’s part of the deal. Like I said, stuff happens.
So there we were with a driveway full of boxes and junk and more than a little accrued frustration. One of Becky’s friends called from out of town, and she shared our morning disappointment. Then we sort of ignored the problem—I guess we figured we could put it back later.
After a couple of hours, people began showing up. Some called first, some just appeared. We knew a couple of them, a few others were friends of friends. One simple call from Becky’s out-of-town buddy caused a small army of folks to descend on our house with a simple question:
How can I help?
In a couple of hours, things were lifted and moved and arranged and repaired. One guy I’d never met showed up with a truckload of tools, and some shelves materialized. They did the tasks we planned, then asked for more.
All of these folks had other plans on a gorgeous Colorado Saturday. They stopped and came and helped. And I truly believe that, to them, it was no big deal.
I wonder a lot about how I’m supposed to share the gospel in my community. I think I need to know a bunch of fancy words and ideas.
God taught me an important lesson this weekend.
Have a great week.
