Have you ever thought God might be better off asking your advice?
Several months ago when this crazy bike ride project began to take shape, my friend Clark Osborn offered a suggestion: get a small group together to pray regularly with you about this project.
Of course, I knew better. I didn’t need any silly group to pray about MY project.
But a funny thing happened. Over the past few months, that group formed anyway. Through a variety of odd circumstances, a group of five people became a core group surrounding this ride. I’d like to claim credit—I believe that goes to One with a bit bigger perspective.
Last week I faced a dilemma, one of those decisions that seemed monumental at the time. This silly wound has delayed training enough to finally force me to confront the possibility of postponing the ride. I felt discouraged, disappointed, disillusioned, and just about any other “dis-“ word you can imagine.
In an uncharacteristic burst of insight, I shared my fear with the core group and asked them to pray about it. We arranged to meet a few days later. When we gathered I asked, “What do you think?”
Basically, there was a single mind in the group: Go for it. No one sensed that postponing was the right choice.
These are thoughtful, wise people. I know they prayed about this issue. I left the meeting confident and encouraged.
If I’d reached that decision alone I would already be second-guessing. I understand that there’s no guarantee that our group’s consensus means we’ve made the right choice, but there’s a great deal of peace in knowing that we sought God’s guidance together.
Jesus said, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
I guess He was serious.
Have you found peace praying with a group? Is there a situation in your life now where you need to gather with “two or three”?
