Choices

Happy Monday. I just listened to an interview that’s got me pondering a word-of-the-week …

CHOICES

There are some choices I’m very glad I don’t have to make.

I listened to the man who decides to open spillways that relieve pressure on Mississippi River levees. Protecting those levees is a vital function that prevents catastrophic flooding in major cities like Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Seems like opening those spillways would be an easy choice—until you realize that many smaller towns will be flooded, on purpose, by the diverted water. Real homes, entire communities, will be sacrificed.

I understand the difficult balance. I know that this sort of choice has to be made.

I’m glad I don’t have to make it.

This particular situation reminds me of people who routinely volunteer to take on choices I avoid. They step up and face impossible decisions with courage and grace.

Maybe we could all begin this new week by thinking of someone we know who makes tough choices. Maybe we can say thank-you, or whisper a prayer of gratitude.

Have a great week.
