Enjoy The Easy Terrain

Happy Saturday! If you’re new to THE CRAZY QUEST, you may wish to read about it here. Basically, I’m tracing my journey as I attempt to answer the question: What would you do if you didn’t know you couldn’t do it?

This week of training: 103 miles

ENJOY THE EASY TERRAIN

You’re either climbing a hill, you’ve just finished one, or you’re about to begin a climb.

That’s a paraphrase of the way many riders view the terrain, but I’m not certain it’s accurate. The hills are the most memorable, but the majority of most rides contain relatively flat, unremarkable terrain.

Life’s like that as well. We recall in vivid detail the emotional highs and lows of grueling climbs and thrilling descents. But most of the ride, and most of life, is the routine, everyday moments that really shape our character and our relationships.

Commentators refer to such terrain as “boring.” Sometimes we think about the ordinary days in life like that as well. We use words like mundane, commonplace, or rat race to describe the “daily grind” of life, but it doesn’t have to be like that.

  • Enjoy the scenery. These can be moments of contemplation without the emotional extremes that demand every ounce of attention.
  • Don’t perceive the routine terrain as territory to simply get through on the way to the interesting parts. Savor each moment, because most of the journey consists of simple, unspectacular interactions. Hug a child, pull a weed, sip the second cup of coffee, because you may not pass this exact spot again.
  • Don’t allow the approaching hill to steal the joy and peace of the moment. There will be time enough for the struggle of the climb and the exhilaration of the descent.

How can you look differently at an everyday moment today?
